Contractor Specifications


                      
1 General
 1.01 Section Includes
 A. Provide concrete masonry units with metal embedments in sizes and configurations as indicated in Contract Documents for attachment of fixtures to walls.
 B. Contractor responsible for providing fixtures to be attached shall furnish concrete masonry units with metal embedments to masonry installer for installation with conventional concrete masonry units. See related sections below.

 1.05 System Descriptions
 A. Design Requirements
 1. Provide products specifically designed for uses indicated in the Contract Documents
 2. Product design shall conform to all technical requirements specified herein
 B. Performance Requirements
 1. Provide products that meet minimum performance requirements of all testing procedures as indicated below
 2. Provide unit masonry that develops a minimum installed compressive strength (f'm) of 1500 psi at 28 days (based on net area)
 1.06 Submittals

 2. Shop drawings and/or photos of each product configuration
 3. Applicable plans, elevations, sections and details should be prepared by the installers of furniture, and etc.
 C. Installation Drawings
 1. Installation Contractors will indicate locations and configurations of concrete masonry units with metal embedments.
 D. Quality Control submittals
 1. Test Reports: Certified reports from independent testing agencies showing compliance with test requirements of specifications. Testing agencies must comply with ASTM C1093-95.
 1.07 Quality Assurance
 A. Qualifications
 1. Manufacturers of products to be supplies under this scope of work must have a minimum of five (5) years experience in the manufacture of CMU's.
 B. Regulatory Requirements
 1. Perform work in compliance with latest editions of:
 a. Federal, state, local codes and ordinances, or agencies having jurisdiction.
 b. Life Safety Code, NFPA 101.
 2. In cases where Specifications call for materials or construction of better quality or larger size than codes require, Specifications shall take preference. Codes shall govern in cases of direct conflict with Specifications or Contract Drawings.
 C. Testing and Performance
 1. Concrete masonry units with metal embedment's shall meet the following minimum test standards. Compliance with test requirements shall be certified by reports of independent testing agencies. Test reports shall indicate the construction of the samples tested with sufficient particularity that construction can be verified.
 2. Static Strength Pullout Test: Measures Strength of the metal embedments's integrated into concrete masonry units to resist pull out loads.

 3. Cyclical Fatigue Loading Test: Measures strength of concrete masonry units with metal embedments to resist cyclical shear and moment type loads applied directly to the surface plates of the embedmente's.

 D. Fire Resistance Ratings
 1. Where indicated, provide materials and constructions identical to those assemblies with fire resistance ratings determined per ASTM E119 by a testing and inspecting agency, by equivalent concrete masonry thickness, or by another means as acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.
 1.08 Delivery, Storage and Handling
 A. Products under this scope of work shall be shipped from teh manufacturer.
 B. Masonry installer shall receive and unload materials at project site, note any damage and file any required freight claims and store materials in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
 C. Handling of M/BED Block should be careful not to chip or break edge or corners.
 1.09 Sequencing and Scheduling
 A. Products supplied under this scope of work shall be delivered to the project site in accordance with the sequencing and scheduling requirements indicated in Contract Documents.
 1.10 Warranty
 A. Comply with requirements of Section 01700.
 B. Manufacturer shallwarrant all products supplied under this scope of work to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the date of final completion.
 C. Any defects in materials and workmanship identified during the warranty period shall be corrected by the manufacturer at no expense to the Owner.
                      
2 Products
 2.01 Manufacturers
 A. Subject to compliance with requirements listed herein, provide products by the following manufacturer:

 B. Other manufacturer's seeking approval must provide the following information to the Architect no later than fourteen (14) days prior to bid date:
 1. Evidence of compliance with Article 1.06 above.
 2. Evidence that products to be supplied meet all technical requirements of this specification.
 3. Physical samples of each of the different types of concrete masonry units with embedment's to be supplied under this scope of work.
 2.02 Materials
 A. Concrete Masonry Units
 1. Concrete masonry units shall conform to ASTM C90-99, Class II, Class 1, normal weight.
 2. Do not use aggregates made from pumice, scoria or tuff.
 3. Manufacture to actual dimensions listed below for corresponding nominal sizes indicated on Drawings:
 a. 6 inch nominal = 5-5/8 inch actual
 b. 8 inch nominal = 7-5/8 inch actual
 c. 12 inch nominal = 11-5/8 inch nominal
 B. Metal Embedments
 1. Metal embedments shall be fabricated from 7 gauge steel plates, commercial quality, hot rolled, pickled and oiled, carbon maximum 0.10, conforming to ASTM a36/A36M-97a.
 2. Shear and punch metals cleanly and accurately. Remove burrs.
 3. All welding during fabrication shall be in conformance with AWS D1.1.
 2.03 Manufactured Units
 A. In order to establish the standard of quality required for this project, concrete masonry units with metal embedments provided under this scope of work shall be M/BED CONCRETE MASONRY UNITS produced under license from M/BED BLOCK SYSTEMS, LLC, St. Louis, MO. Catalogue numbers references below to identify different configurations are for 8 inch nominal units. Provide configurations per manufacturers literature and availability.
 B. Decriptions of Configurations:
 1. 881E: 8"x8" metal plate in one end face only.
 2. 881F: 8"x8" metal plate in one side face only.
 3. 8161F: 8"x16" metal plate in one side face only.
 4. 882F: 8"x8" metal plates in two side faces.
 5. 8162F: 8"x16" metal plates in two side faces.
 6. 882F1E: 8"x8" metal plates in two side faces and one end face (bull nose).
 7. 8162F1E: 8"x16" metal plates on two side faces and one end face (bull nose).
 2.04 Fabrication
 A. Shop Assembly
 1. Integrate metal embedment plates into concrete masonry mold cavaties during the manufacturing process at the concrete masonry unit factory.
 2. Assemble with materials of size, thickness and shapes indicated but no less than that needed to comply with performance requirements indicated herein. Work to dimensions indicated or accepted on shop drawings, using proven details of fabrication and support. Use type of materials indicated or specified for various components.
 B. Shop/Factory Finishing
 1. Apply 2-3 mils Red Oxide Primer to metal surfaces. Primer shall be Sherwin Willimas #B50RV 6227 or equal, recommended by the manufacturer for exterior exposure on iron or steel substrates, and compatible with alkyd, latex and acrylic top coats.
 2. Concrete faces of units shall be free from chips, cracks, crazes or any other imperfection that would detract from the structural performance of the wall.
 C. Tolerances
 1. Metal embedment plates shall be manufactured as an integral part of the CMU and be free from any movement.
 2. Exposed work shall be true to line and level with accurate angles and surfaces and straight clean edges.
